If you know the right moment and a handful of straightforward tricks, you can begin the season with sturdy young plants.
The seed packets are lined up, the impatience is real – yet outside the nights are still chilly. This is exactly where a greenhouse comes into its own, whether it’s a full-size structure in the garden or a compact mini version on the balcony. Start tomatoes under cover with purpose and you’ll be weeks ahead, harvesting noticeably earlier. Most people don’t fail because they lack enthusiasm, but because they rely on the wrong timetable and overlook a few deceptively important details.
Why sowing tomatoes in a greenhouse changes everything
Tomatoes originally come from warmer parts of the world. In our climate, early spring brings two main challenges: low night-time temperatures and insufficient light. A greenhouse helps with both at once.
Even an unheated glasshouse or polytunnel holds on to heat gathered during the day. Overnight, the soil and seed trays don’t cool down as sharply as they would outdoors. That stability is exactly what seeds need to germinate reliably.

Compared with a windowsill, light in a greenhouse is spread more evenly. Seedlings don’t have to stretch “towards the pane”, so they’re less likely to become long, thin and weak. There’s another advantage too: if you ventilate regularly, you cut down the damp, stagnant air in which fungal diseases – including the dreaded damping-off disease in seedlings – can take hold very quickly.
The ideal conditions: temperature, light and moisture
For tomato germination (botanical name: Solanum lycopersicum), the decisive factor is the temperature in the compost. The sweet spot is 20 to 22 °C, with values up to about 27 °C still workable. In that range, the first shoots typically appear after five to ten days.
In an unheated greenhouse at the end of winter, night-time temperatures are often too low. If you want to get going earlier, a little technical help can make the difference:
- Heat mat placed under seed trays
- Heating cable in the base of a cold frame
- Insulating layer (e.g. a polystyrene sheet) beneath the pots/trays
Moisture is just as critical. The compost should be evenly moist, but never waterlogged. Standing water encourages rot and fungi; if it’s too dry, seedlings can shrivel before they properly emerge.
A cover – the lid of a mini propagator, clear film, or a dome – creates a warm, humid microclimate at the start. As soon as the first green tips show, however, that cover needs to be opened gradually.

Timing matters: when tomato seed really belongs in the compost
Rather than following the calendar blindly, it pays to consider the so-called last frost night in your area. From that date, you can work backwards to a very dependable sowing window.

From sowing to planting out into the bed, tomato plants generally need around six to eight weeks. If you sow much earlier than that, you risk leggy, underpowered plants that have to sit cramped for weeks while you wait for outdoor temperatures to become suitable.
How to sow tomatoes perfectly in the greenhouse
On paper, the steps look simple. In practice, they’re what separates average results from consistently strong young plants – especially if you stick to them.
1. Prepare suitable containers and compost
For starting tomatoes, these all work well:
- Small pots (e.g. 8 cm diameter)
- Seed trays
- Cell trays (multi-cell plug trays)
The shape matters less than reliable drainage. No container should be left standing in water. As a growing medium, a fine seed compost is ideal: low in nutrients, airy, and free of large pieces. That encourages dense root development without the plants becoming overly lush and soft.
Moisten the compost lightly before adding seed. If it’s too wet, it compacts easily; if it’s too dry, germination gets off to a sluggish start.
2. Sow correctly and label everything
One to two seeds per pot or cell is enough. Sow them at roughly 0.5 cm deep, then cover lightly with compost and press down only gently.

A simple plastic label or a wooden stick with the variety name is sufficient. Then place the pots/trays into the greenhouse or a mini propagator and cover.

At this stage, check briefly every day. The compost must never dry out, but it also shouldn’t look glossy wet. A spray bottle is ideal for dampening the surface without washing seeds out of place.
As soon as the first delicate arches of seedlings appear, open the cover slightly. Over the next few days, increase ventilation until the lid can come off completely. This helps the young plants adjust gradually to drier air.
Potting on and hardening off: turning seedlings into robust tomato plants
Once plants have two to three “true” leaves (in addition to the first seed leaves), the sowing container becomes too tight. That’s when the most important care task comes up: pricking out, meaning moving them into larger pots.
A tip that surprises many beginners: tomatoes cope very well with being planted deeper when you pot them on. Along the buried section of stem, the plant produces extra roots. Later, this develops into a powerful root ball.

Common problems – and how to avoid them
Long, thin, unstable seedlings
The cause is almost always too little light combined with overly warm air. What helps:
- Put trays and pots in the brightest part of the greenhouse
- Open the cover promptly after germination
- Don’t “raise” tomatoes above a fan heater that overheats the air
Seedlings collapsing or rotting
The classic picture is wet compost and tiny plants that topple over at the base. The culprit is fungi, encouraged by waterlogging and poor ventilation. Countermeasures:
- Keep compost moist, not soaked
- Ventilate regularly, even on cool days (briefly is enough)
- Use clean containers and fresh, high-quality seed compost
Mini greenhouse on the balcony: small space, big impact
No garden doesn’t have to mean no strong tomato plants. A slim mini greenhouse or a multi-tier greenhouse shelving unit on the balcony is already enough. It creates a sheltered climate that can be surprisingly close to what a larger garden greenhouse provides.
The same rules apply: seed compost, careful watering, and consistent ventilation. On a south-facing balcony in particular, temperatures inside can soar. On sunny days, you must open the cover/film, otherwise the delicate plants can scorch.
Why the effort pays off – and what experienced growers watch for
Sowing your own tomatoes in a greenhouse gives you huge freedom in choosing varieties. From old, richly flavoured beefsteak types to colourful cherry varieties, you can raise plenty of rarities that are hardly available in shops.
At the same time, you build a much clearer feel for what the plants actually need. Anyone who has seen a vigorous home-raised tomato shrug off the first summer storm is unlikely to want to go back to pale, mass-produced garden-centre plants.
More experienced gardeners also use small temperature tweaks: slightly cooler nights in the greenhouse slow down overly rapid stretching, while sufficiently warm daytime temperatures support root growth. In well-managed hobby greenhouses, plants are often ready by the end of April with thick stems and dark foliage – an early advantage that later shows up as a long, steady harvesting season.
