Many homeowners get fed up with steep slopes around the property: they look bare, heavy rain can wash them out, and a traditional retaining wall can blow a huge hole in the budget. That is why landscape gardeners are increasingly choosing a different approach. Instead of concrete, plant roots do the job of holding the soil in place - often for less than €20 per m².
Why a planted slope is often better than any wall
A stabilised slope has to do two things well: remain secure and still absorb water. With a solid concrete wall, rainwater tends to bounce off, collect at the bottom and then create issues elsewhere. A green, planted slope behaves in a completely different way.

Plants that produce lots of fine side roots are typical candidates. They grip the soil like a tight mesh. At the same time, dense foliage reduces the impact of raindrops. Instead of hitting exposed earth, water lands on leaves and flowers, runs off more gently and can soak in without cutting channels into the ground.
How to plant it properly: a simple guide for your own slope
If you want to green a slope yourself, you do not need specialist machinery - you need a clear plan:
- Clear the slope thoroughly of perennial weeds that spread by roots
- Plant in a staggered pattern (like a “chequerboard”), not in straight rows
- Allow for 4–5 plants per square metre
- Use groups of 6–7 of the same plant to create a calmer overall look
- Mulch immediately after planting, ideally with coarse woodchip (e.g. BRF)
On steeper gradients from about 15% upwards, mulch alone is often not enough. A simple aid then makes a big difference: a biodegradable jute or coir mat. Lay it loosely over the soil, peg it down with wooden stakes, and cut cross-shaped openings where each plant will go. Young plants can then be placed (still in their pots’ rootball shape) into these slits. After one to two years, the root network takes over the stabilising work, and the mat gradually rots away.
Good planting windows are autumn from mid-September to the end of November, and spring in March and April. During these periods the soil is usually moist enough, and plants can establish roots without extreme heat or hard frost.
Three planting zones: how to create a true cascade of flowers
A well-designed slope works in layers. Each level comes with different conditions and needs the right plants. If you use these differences to your advantage, you get stability and appearance in one package.
Upper area: dry, windy, exposed to sun
Right at the top, soil is often poorest and most exposed to wind. This is where drought-tolerant species that cope with heat and changeable weather perform best:
- Ornamental grasses such as feather grass or fountain grass
- Hardy dwarf shrubs such as broom or other rock-dwelling shrub types
- Tough subshrubs such as germander or low-growing spindle (Euonymus) forms
- Small flowering shrubs with deep-reaching roots
These choices give the bank shape and create vertical structure. They are low-maintenance, needing only occasional pruning and, in the first few weeks, some watering to help them establish.
Middle of the slope: where erosion bites hardest
In the mid-slope zone, rainfall and gravity tend to be most aggressive. This is the place for ground-hugging, strongly rooting perennials and compact woody plants. Together they form a closed carpet that binds the soil:
- Heuchera varieties with coloured foliage to add visual depth
- Stonecrops (Sedum) and other Sedum species for drier spots
- Low cushion perennials such as baby’s-breath and fleabane
- Reliable slope classics such as creeping St John’s wort or carpet-form shrub varieties
This layer functions like a living shield: it slows run-off, spreads water out across the surface, and fills gaps before rills and grooves can develop.
Lower area: wetter, richer in nutrients, often shadier
At the bottom, water and nutrients collect. The soil is usually heavier and cooler here. Many flowering perennials cope extremely well with these conditions:
- Sweet alyssum, which can form genuine carpets of flowers
- Various bellflower (Campanula) species
- Violets and other spring-flowering plants
- Additional Sedum and fleabane varieties for the transition areas
Large stones or boulders are also useful for creating small, step-like terraces. They break up the flow of water, hold back soil and provide niches for extra planting.
What slope greening really costs
Compared with a built retaining wall at €150 to €300 per m², a planted bank can look almost modest. Many projects come in well under €20 per m², especially if you avoid expensive specimen shrubs.

There are situations where plants on their own are not enough. If cracks or settlement are already visible near buildings, a structural engineer or an experienced landscape contractor should inspect the slope before any work begins.
Practical example: from problem slope to a flowering rain brake
A common scenario looks like this: a bank with roughly a 30-degree incline sits exposed to driving rain, and soil repeatedly washes onto a garden path. Instead of putting in a heavy retaining wall, the owner opts for robust perennial planting. Groundcovers such as periwinkle and creeping species with dense foliage secure the critical areas, a jute mat keeps the soil in place at the outset, and a layer of coarse woodchip goes on top.
Planting is done in autumn, before the first night frosts. Over the next two years the cover closes up, the slope flowers in stages throughout the season, and heavy rain infiltrates far more effectively. The budget stays clearly below €20 per m² - yet visually it looks like a measure that cost many times more.
Useful extra information for planning at home
Some of the terminology sounds specialist, but it is easy to demystify. Mulch simply means a protective layer of organic material that reduces evaporation, suppresses weeds and shields soil from driving rain. BRF, often mentioned, refers to coarsely chipped fresh wood from branches and twigs - ideal on slopes because it interlocks and is less likely to slide.
When putting together your plant list, it is worth considering insects and birds. Nectar-rich perennials, berry-bearing shrubs and evergreen species provide food and shelter. The result is not only a stable slope, but also a small, low-maintenance refuge for biodiversity in your own garden.
It gets particularly interesting when you combine slope planting with other features: a narrow switchback path, a few natural-stone steps or a small seating area at the bottom edge can make the space usable. In this way, a once-disliked bank becomes a designed garden area that noticeably improves the property - without heavy machinery or an expensive concrete wall.
