Winter can be hard on young saplings and newly planted fruit trees, particularly when temperatures plunge overnight. Wrapping the trunk with TNT (non-woven fabric/horticultural fleece) helps soften thermal shock and offers protection against frost without suffocating the plant.

If you’re growing long-lived fruit trees in the garden, think of TNT as a temporary measure rather than a permanent fix. It is most useful for young fruit trees during harsher winter nights when planning and managing a home orchard.
The best results come from combining a light wrap with well-managed soil and daily observation after cold fronts. If the fabric is wet, tight or dirty, adjust it straight away-keeping ventilation, protection and safety in place so the tree can continue to grow.
