The forgotten grandma trick to stop moss taking over your lawn in spring

A long-forgotten grandma trick can stop it happening.

Plenty of garden owners know the disappointment: winter finally ends, and instead of a lush green lawn you’re left with a patchy, mossy mat. The good news is that you can reduce the problem dramatically with a simple, preventative routine-so long as you start in late winter and get the soil “spring-ready”.

Why moss loves spring on your lawn

After a wet winter, the ground is often waterlogged and compacted. Water sits in dips, the soil becomes heavy, and hardly any air gets in. Those conditions suit moss perfectly. It manages with very few nutrients and little light, and it thrives wherever grass has been weakened.

Common moss hotspots in the garden include:

  • shaded corners beneath trees or hedges
  • areas where rainwater pools
  • heavily compacted patches, such as near paths or play areas
  • acidic soil with a low pH

If you also mow very short, moss has an even easier time. Closely cut grass develops shallower roots, dries out more quickly and becomes more vulnerable to stress. By contrast, slightly longer grass-around 5 to 6 centimetres-helps the lawn stay stronger and robs moss of light and space.

The old grandma trick: prevent it rather than chasing it

The traditional approach is so straightforward that many people dismiss it at first. The reasoning is simple, though: instead of fighting moss cushions in April, you prepare the lawn at the end of winter so moss struggles to take hold in the first place.

It’s done in two stages:

  1. Treatment with an iron sulphate solution
  2. A fine top-dressing of river sand with a little rock dust

Step 1: iron sulphate – weaken moss, support the lawn

In late winter-when the ground is no longer frozen but the lawn hasn’t properly started growing yet-the first part of the routine begins. Gardeners dissolve iron sulphate in water and apply it across the lawn using a watering can or a sprayer.

How the iron sulphate treatment is typically done

  • Weather: a dry but overcast day, no frost, no strong wind
  • Application: spread the solution evenly over the affected areas
  • Aftercare: avoid walking on the lawn for a few days

Iron sulphate draws moisture out of moss; the cushions turn dark brown to black and die back. At the same time, the iron supports chlorophyll formation, so as temperatures rise the grass can look noticeably richer in colour.

Careful handling matters. If any splashes land on paving slabs or concrete, rinse them off thoroughly straight away, otherwise rust stains can appear. Children and pets should also stay off the treated area for a short period until the solution has soaked in and dried.

As soon as the moss feels dry and crumbly, rake the lawn thoroughly to remove the dead material. You’ll be left with small gaps in the turf-these are exactly the spaces where grass should re-establish later, rather than moss returning.

Step 2: river sand and rock dust to improve the soil

The second stage may look less dramatic, but it targets the underlying soil conditions. Over the cleared area, apply a very thin layer of river sand mixed with a small amount of rock dust, for example dust made from volcanic rock.

How many hobby gardeners mix the sand top-dressing

  • Sand type: washed river sand, ideally free from clay and salt
  • Additive: roughly 10 to 15 percent fine rock dust
  • Layer thickness: 2 to 3 millimetres across the whole lawn

The sand loosens the surface and helps water drain away more readily. Standing water reduces, the soil becomes more aerated, and grass roots find it easier to spread. The rock dust provides trace elements and may gently raise the pH over time, which moss tends not to enjoy.

This thin dressing gradually works into the top few centimetres of soil-helped by rainfall, watering, and the pressure from shoes or a lawnmower. The lawn won’t suddenly look “catalogue perfect”, but in the weeks that follow it gets far better conditions for spring growth.

What your lawn needs for the rest of the year

To keep moss under control long term, it helps to stick to a few simple rules throughout the year. The most important is mowing height. Setting the mower a little higher can make a real difference.

A care routine for a lawn with less moss

  • Mowing height: 5–6 cm instead of a “golf green” cut-this supports stronger roots
  • Scarifying: in spring and autumn to remove thatch
  • Aeration: loosen the soil at least once a year using a hollow-tine tool or a spiked roller
  • Gentle fertiliser: choose mild, slow-release products rather than “turbo” feeds
  • Watering: water less often but thoroughly, instead of constantly “dripping” a little

Some gardeners lightly dust very acidic patches with well-aged wood ash; others use bicarbonate of soda sparingly on isolated moss spots. However, measures like these should be used with restraint and never without considering the soil values.

The iron sulphate-and-sand routine can also be repeated in autumn, especially in areas that regularly face very wet winters. That way, grass roots enter the colder months more stable and the surface is less likely to become thatchy.

When a soil test is worth doing

If you end up battling moss every year even though your general care is solid, a simple soil test can provide clarity. Many garden centres sell kits that show the pH. If it’s clearly on the acidic side, moss will feel more at home than grass.

In that situation, sand and rock dust may be supported by modest applications of lime. Lime should only be used after testing and in measured amounts. Even so, the grandma trick remains useful because it improves soil structure and gives the grass time to establish.

Practical everyday examples

In terraced housing estates with small gardens, moss often appears where children play constantly and the ground is trampled flat. Here, combining iron sulphate and sand with a slightly longer “rest period” for the lawn in late winter can work wonders.

In older gardens with large trees, lack of light is usually the main challenge. The grandma trick can reduce moss’s advantage, but it won’t replace pruning a few branches or choosing shade-tolerant grass varieties. Sometimes it makes more sense to turn certain areas into a shade border with perennials rather than forcing dense turf everywhere.

Risks, limits and sensible add-ons

Iron sulphate is a proven product, but it needs careful use. If you significantly overdose, you risk scorching the grass blades. That’s why you should always follow the manufacturer’s guidance and apply conservatively. On paved surfaces, it can leave unwanted stains, so quick rinsing is important.

The sand layer won’t substitute for major soil replacement if the subsoil is extremely compacted or made up of heavy clay. In those cases, breaking up the ground in spots with a drill or spade and filling the holes with sand can be a practical extra step.

Combine the old grandma trick with modern lawn care and the result can be impressively resilient: fewer moss cushions, denser growth, and a lawn that turns green much faster in spring. Not flashy, not expensive-but effective if you remember to do it in late winter.
