Anyone planting stonecrop (Sedum), biting stonecrop or other sedum varieties usually expects a tough, nearly indestructible plant. Then, after a few bouts of rain, the container still ends up waterlogged - leaves turn soft and mushy, and roots begin to rot. In most cases the real problem isn’t visible at the top; it’s down in the planting hole. That’s where it’s decided whether excess water can drain away freely or becomes a deadly trap.
Why Sedum suddenly dies despite being so hardy
Sedum thrives in sun and heat, and it prefers lean, nutrient-poor soil. Most varieties also cope well with cold. What it cannot tolerate at all, however, is stagnant water around the roots. And that happens in balcony planters, pots and even garden beds more quickly than many people expect.
With every watering, the compost settles a little more. Over time the growing medium compacts and the small air gaps disappear. Eventually, water stops passing through cleanly and instead collects at the bottom. The result is a hidden “water basin” where the roots effectively drown.

Do you still need expanded clay for Sedum?
Expanded clay pellets and gravel have a well-established role in horticulture and can certainly still be used. For Sedum in pots and smaller containers, though, kitchen drainage is usually completely sufficient - as long as it’s done properly.

- Choose a site that is sunny to full sun.
- Keep the substrate sandy and lean, with low organic content.
- Water sparingly; slightly too dry is better than too wet.
- Avoid nitrogen-rich all-purpose fertiliser, otherwise shoots become soft and flop over.
Follow these points and you’ll have a plant that can handle heatwaves, dry spells and even moderate cold without trouble. Especially during long periods without rain, many gardeners use Sedum to green roofs, wall tops or gravel beds without constantly reaching for the watering can.
Risks and limits of kitchen drainage
Despite the advantages, there are a few cautions to keep in mind. Shells from salted pistachios or peanuts must never go into the pot. Salt damages roots and, in smaller containers, can quickly cause leaf discolouration and growth problems.
If you crush the material too finely - for example by grinding it down - you lose the drainage effect. The fragments then mix into the compost, pores clog up, and the soil behaves much as it would without any extra layer. A few solid hammer strikes are better than turning it into dust.
In areas where you grow plants that are extremely sensitive to lime, avoid using eggshells directly around those species. Sedum usually tolerates a bit more calcium in the soil without issue, but this method would be unsuitable for ericaceous plants such as azaleas.
