Why You Should Stop Spring Digging: Broadfork and Mulch Instead

The first sunny day arrives, the soil begins to dry, and the spade is waiting: for generations, turning the soil in spring has felt like the official start of the new gardening season. The problem is that what was long treated as a must-do is increasingly proving to be a risk for soil life, your back - and, ultimately, your harvest.

Why traditional digging is so problematic

Beneath our feet, the soil is far more alive than it looks. In just 1 gram of healthy earth there are hundreds of millions to billions of bacteria, alongside fungi, nematodes, tiny arthropods and earthworms.

These organisms are not spread at random. Each soil layer has its own conditions, with particular moisture levels, oxygen availability and temperature. That is exactly where deep digging with a spade causes trouble:

  • Organisms from deeper, low-oxygen layers are suddenly exposed at the surface and die off.
  • Creatures from the upper, well-aerated zone are buried in depths where they cannot survive.
  • Fine fungal networks are torn apart, soil crumbs collapse, and the structure breaks down.

In spring in particular - precisely when soil life should be gearing up - this can amount to a real clear-out underground. The result is reduced nutrient cycling, poorer water infiltration and plants under stress.

Mycorrhiza: the plants’ invisible supply network

Mycorrhizal fungi are especially vulnerable. Their hair-fine threads wrap around roots and effectively extend them. They reach nutrients that roots cannot access alone and bring water from the tiniest pores.

When soil is aggressively flipped over, that network is ripped apart. Vegetables, fruit bushes and perennials are, quite literally, less well “connected”, and they must slowly rebuild their partnership with fungi. During that period they tend to grow more hesitantly and are more prone to disease and drought stress.

Be kind to the soil: how a broadfork changes everything

Rather than turning the ground upside down, more and more gardeners are switching to a broadfork-style tool that loosens the soil without inverting it. It has several sturdy tines and two handles, so you work with leverage.

How to use it in a bed:

  • Step the tool vertically into the soil.
  • Pull the handles back until the soil lifts slightly.
  • Let it settle, move along a little, and repeat.

A major advantage for older gardeners: less strain on your back

This approach is particularly appealing for older gardeners. Instead of hoisting heavy clods with a spade, you rely on leverage with both arms, which takes significant pressure off the lower back.

Anyone who quickly gets backache - or simply wants to work more gently - can benefit greatly. Many people say the broadfork-style method lets them work for longer and more comfortably in the bed, without feeling as if they are “falling apart” the next day.

Timing matters. The sweet spot is soil that is slightly damp. If it is too dry, it becomes rock-hard and can even bend the tines; if it is waterlogged, it smears and then compacts again as it dries. In many gardens, the day after a good spring shower is ideal.

Mulching: the quiet revolution in the vegetable garden

If you want to look after soil properly, it is not just about loosening - it is about consistent protection. That is where mulch comes in. You cover the ground with organic material, much as woodland soil is continually blanketed with leaf litter.

Suitable materials include, for example:

  • straw or hay (not freshly cut; slightly wilted is best)
  • leaves, ideally shredded or chopped
  • dried grass clippings in thin layers
  • woodchip, especially for paths and under shrubs

The benefits often show up after just one season:

  • The soil stays moist for longer, so watering needs drop noticeably.
  • Temperature swings are smaller, so microorganisms work more steadily.
  • Weeds germinate less readily under the cover.

  • Earthworms pull mulch down into deeper layers and turn it into fertile humus.

For anyone who no longer wants to spend hours weeding and lugging things around, this saves time and energy. Less hoeing, less watering, less bending - the garden increasingly “runs in the background” because the soil is doing the work.

Soil biology: why less interference often means more yield

Research is making one point ever clearer: plants are not lone fighters. They constantly interact with bacteria, fungi and microscopic life in the soil. Through root exudates they “feed” these partners, which in return release nutrients or help fend off pathogens.

A few examples of this teamwork:

  • Bacteria fix nitrogen from the air and make it available to plants.
  • Fungi multiply the effective reach of roots and transport minerals.
  • Earthworms mix in organic matter and leave nutrient-rich castings.

When soil is not fully turned over year after year, stable, complex communities can establish themselves. You notice it in practice: plants grow more evenly, cope better with dry spells and need less external fertiliser.

Practical switch: what you can do instead of digging

No one needs to overhaul their whole garden overnight. A gradual change is more than enough. One workable plan for this year:

  • Loosen beds only with a broadfork-style tool, and stop turning the soil.
  • Add a thin layer of mature compost on top, about 5 cm.
  • Cover bare areas immediately with mulch so they do not dry out or crust over.

If your soil is heavily compacted or very heavy (high in clay), an initial, one-off deeper intervention can be necessary. The key is not to treat that as an annual ritual, but as a starting point. With each season that more organic matter is added on top and less deep disturbance happens, the structure improves on its own.

What healthy soil looks like in everyday gardening

There are plenty of signs that you are on the right track:

  • When you dig with your hand or a small trowel, you get stable crumbs rather than hard lumps.
  • Earthworms appear after just a few centimetres.
  • After heavy rain, water does not sit for long; it drains away quickly.
  • The surface dries, but underneath it remains pleasantly moist.

Soil like this practically carries the plants. Roots push in more easily, nutrients are more evenly distributed, and the bed is comfortable to work for much of the year.

Common mistakes - and how to avoid them

When you move from spade work to gentler methods, it is easy to stumble at first. Typical pitfalls include:

  • Mulch layers that are too thick: more than 10–15 cm can rot, especially if you use fresh grass clippings.
  • The wrong material around young plants: coarse woodchip directly in a vegetable bed can lock up nutrients; finer compost or leaves are better.
  • Working when it is wet: every footstep on wet ground compacts it - wait until the soil feels “crumbly”.
  • Skipping loosening altogether: in heavily compacted soils, roots initially need help just to get started.

If you keep these points in mind, you can build, step by step, a system that brings less work and more yield over the long term.

Why it is worth saying goodbye to the spade ritual

Many older gardeners say that, after switching, spring suddenly feels far less exhausting. Instead of wrestling heavy clods for days, a few hours of gentle loosening and applying mulch is enough.

But the real change happens within the soil: more earthworms, finer humus, better water absorption. That becomes especially obvious in dry summers, when mulched beds still have life while unprotected ground has long since dried out.

If you treat your vegetable garden as you would any living organism - carefully, respectfully, without brutal interventions - you are rewarded with steadier harvests and less physical strain. The old spring spade ritual can then, quite happily, become a thing of the past.
