Applying a wash of wood ash mixed with water to the lemon tree trunk is a long-standing gardening technique, used mainly to create a physical barrier against ants climbing the tree. How do you prepare the ash paste properly?
You only need suitable ash and water. The goal is a thickness similar to heavy paint, so it clings to the trunk rather than running straight off. You can do it like this:

- stir until it becomes a thick paste;

Will ash on its own solve ants and other pests?
No. Ash paste is best seen as a temporary, supportive physical barrier. If your lemon tree has curled leaves, misshapen new growth, sticky honeydew, dark sooty mould, or large numbers of insects, you need to identify the cause before choosing how to manage it. An aphid infestation, for example, will not disappear simply because fewer ants are reaching the canopy.
The most plausible benefit of this method is making a commonly used route harder for ants without immediately turning to chemical products. Because ash can also shift pH when it reaches the soil, it needs to be applied in a controlled, localised and moderate way. To keep a lemon tree healthy, it remains more important to monitor leaves, shoots, bark, drainage and signs of pests than to repeat any home remedy indiscriminately.
