If you come across them in your garden, it pays to take a very close look.
More and more hobby gardeners are spotting strange pink lumps in spring, stuck to posts, stones or reed stems around the pond. They look like leftover Easter decorations, yet they cling stubbornly to any damp, vertical surface. These striking blobs are not a craft project - they are the beginning of a quiet invasion that can put pond plants, vegetable patches and even local wildlife under serious pressure.
What the pink “egg clusters” look like in the garden
Once you know what to look for, you cannot miss them. You will not find them in the middle of a lawn - they are almost always right beside water.
- Usually only a few centimetres long, shaped like a tight cluster
- Individual beads are round, about 2–3 millimetres across

- zoological institutes and natural history museums
For a first assessment, photos sent by email are often enough. Many authorities now provide reporting forms for invasive species so sightings can be recorded centrally.
Step 3: remove the clutches in a targeted way

- loss of native species

- changes to entire ecosystems
- spread of new diseases or parasites
