With a simple bottle trick, your plants can stay surprisingly healthy even if you don’t water them every day.
Plenty of hobby gardeners have been there: a packed diary, a heatwave or a holiday trip - and the once-lush houseplants or balcony pots suddenly look miserable. Instead of investing in complicated irrigation kits, a basic plastic bottle often does the job by turning into a mini drip system. One small detail makes all the difference, though - and getting it wrong decides whether your plants recover or keep drying out.
How the bottle trick actually works
The approach is deceptively straightforward: you fill a plastic bottle with water and push it upside down into the compost. You make small holes in the cap so the water can seep out slowly. Gravity and the compost’s suction work together so the plant receives water exactly when it needs it.
Think of it like rain in slow motion: the compost only absorbs as much moisture as it can realistically hold. When the root zone dries out, more water is drawn down. When the growing medium is already moist enough, the flow naturally slows to a crawl.

Some plants prefer water in small doses with longer dry spells in between. For them, constantly moist compost is a recipe for trouble.

With these, ongoing moisture can lead to root rot. Their compost can - and should - dry out noticeably between waterings.

For trips longer than a week, it can be better to use two smaller bottles instead of one large one - that helps spread moisture more evenly through the pot. What matters is that the bottle is secure and won’t topple over with the first gust of wind. A firm fit in the compost, or a small wooden support, is often enough.
